Supplements 101

💊 Intro: Supplements 101

Walk into any supplement store or spend five minutes on fitness TikTok and you’ll probably feel like you need:

👉 protein powders
👉 pre-workouts
👉 fat burners
👉 testosterone boosters
👉 greens powders
👉 recovery formulas
👉 sleep gummies
👉 and about 20 other products with flashy labels and fake promises.

Honestly…

👉 the supplement industry has gotten completely out of control.

Everybody is trying to sell you the next magic pill or muscle-building secret.

And with inflation rising and the cost of healthy living getting more expensive, more people are wasting money on supplements they probably don’t even need.

That’s one of the biggest reasons I wanted to write this Supplements 101 guide.

Because before you spend hundreds of dollars chasing the “perfect” supplement stack…

👉 we need to talk about what actually matters first.

Most people don’t even have the basics down

Let’s keep it real for a second.

A lot of people:

  • don’t sleep enough
  • barely drink water
  • avoid fruits and vegetables
  • don’t train consistently
  • and eat ultra-processed foods all day

But somehow think another supplement is going to magically fix everything.

That’s not how health works.

And honestly?

👉 this is exactly why so many people are frustrated with the supplement industry.

This is my stance on supplements

Before we talk about which supplements actually work and which ones are mostly hype…

👉 I want to make my stance very clear.

I am NOT anti-supplement.

Some supplements absolutely can help.

In fact, things like:

  • creatine
  • protein powder
  • and certain vitamins

can be useful tools when used correctly.

But supplements should SUPPLEMENT your nutrition…

👉 not replace real food.

That’s literally where the word supplement comes from.

Why real food still beats most supplements

Personally, other than a few basics like creatine, I will almost always recommend getting most of your nutrients from real food whenever possible.

Because real food gives you:

  • protein
  • fiber
  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • healthy fats
  • and nutrients working together naturally

A pill or powder usually can’t fully replicate that.

And honestly?

👉 a lot of supplements aren’t regulated as well as people think they are.

Sometimes you can’t fully verify:

  • ingredient quality
  • dosage accuracy
  • or even what’s truly inside the product.

Which is another reason why relying completely on supplements instead of improving your actual diet can become a problem.

But let’s also be realistic

Now with that said…

👉 I understand life isn’t perfect.

Not everyone has time to cook every meal.
Not everyone can afford premium healthy foods all the time.
And sometimes supplements CAN make hitting your goals easier and more convenient.

That’s where I think supplements can actually help.

Not as magic solutions…

👉 but as tools.

And in this article, I want to break down:

  • how to save money on supplements
  • which supplements actually work
  • and why real food should still be the foundation of your health and fitness journey.

💊 What Are Supplements, Exactly?

Before we go any further, let’s first clearly define what supplements actually are.

Because a lot of people hear the word “supplement” and instantly think about:

👉 giant tubs of protein powder
👉 pre-workouts that make your face itch
👉 or influencers trying to sell you pills online.

But supplements are much broader than that.

Supplements are meant to SUPPORT your diet

That’s the key word here:

👉 SUPPORT.

Supplements were originally designed to help supplement nutrients that may be missing from your diet.

That can include things like:

  • protein powder
  • creatine
  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • fish oil
  • electrolyte powders
  • or even fiber supplements

The important thing to understand is that supplements are NOT supposed to completely replace healthy eating.

And honestly?

👉 I think that’s where a lot of people get confused today.

The fitness industry has changed what supplements mean

Now it feels like supplements are being marketed as:

👉 shortcuts
👉 magic muscle builders
👉 fat-burning miracles
👉 or “secret” formulas only influencers know about.

And because of social media, people are constantly being told they need:

  • more supplements
  • bigger stacks
  • stronger formulas
  • and more expensive products

just to stay healthy or build muscle.

But that’s not reality.

Most supplements are convenience tools

This is the best way to think about them.

Supplements are usually:
👉 convenience tools
👉 support tools
👉 or gap-fillers

For example:

  • protein powder can help if you struggle to hit protein goals
  • creatine may help improve performance and recovery
  • vitamin D can help people who don’t get enough sunlight

That makes sense.

But if someone:

  • barely eats fruits and vegetables
  • doesn’t sleep
  • never exercises
  • and drinks no water

👉 no supplement stack is going to save them.

👉 My personal stance

Personally, I think real food should always be the foundation whenever possible.

Because real food gives your body:

  • protein
  • fiber
  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • antioxidants
  • healthy fats
  • and nutrients working together naturally

A lot of supplements simply can’t fully replicate that.

But at the same time…

👉 I’m not anti-supplement either.

Some supplements absolutely can help when used correctly.

The problem is when people start relying on supplements instead of fixing the basics first.

And unfortunately…

👉 that’s exactly what the supplement industry wants people to do sometimes.

🥗 Why Real Food Still Beats Most Supplements

what to eat after a workout

Now that we’ve established what supplements are actually supposed to do…

👉 let’s talk about why real food still beats most supplements most of the time.

And honestly, I think this is where people overcomplicate health and fitness.

Think about it like this

Why would you want to take a B12 vitamin pill every morning…

👉 when you could just eat a can of sardines?

ACGFitness readers already know how much I love sardines, and here’s exactly why.

Not only are they high in:
👉 B12 vitamins

but they ALSO have:
👉 protein
👉 omega-3 fatty acids
👉 calcium
👉 and a bunch of other health benefits too.

Oh…
👉 and they’re usually way cheaper than buying another bottle of pills every month on top of groceries that are already getting more expensive by the day.

That’s the difference between real food and isolated supplements.

Real food gives you MULTIPLE benefits at once.

Blueberries are another perfect example

What sounds better honestly?

👉 a handful of blueberries

or

👉 some bland pill that only does one thing?

Blueberries give you:
👉 fiber
👉 vitamin C
👉 manganese
👉 antioxidants
👉 hydration

and they actually taste good too.

That’s why I’ll almost always lean toward real food first whenever possible.

Because your body benefits from nutrients working together naturally instead of just isolating one thing in capsule form.

Real food is also more filling and satisfying

This is another thing supplement companies don’t really talk about.

You can swallow a handful of pills and still feel hungry afterward.

But eating:
👉 fruit
👉 vegetables
👉 protein
👉 healthy fats

actually satisfies your body.

That fullness matters.

Especially now when food prices are rising and people are trying to avoid overeating or wasting money on junk food later in the day.

This is where the supplement industry loses people

A lot of companies try to convince you that health comes from:
👉 pills
👉 powders
👉 gummies
👉 or complicated supplement stacks

when in reality…

👉 most people would improve their health dramatically just by eating better foods consistently.

More fruit.
More vegetables.
More quality protein.
More water.

Simple stuff.

👉 The takeaway

Supplements should SUPPORT a healthy diet…

👉 not become the diet itself.

Because most of the time:

👉 real food is still cheaper, more filling, more nutritious, and more beneficial overall.

🏪 The Supplement Industry Trap

This is the part I really want beginners to understand.

Because I’ve been there myself.

I remember walking into stores like:
👉 GNC
👉 Vitamin Shoppe
👉 and other supplement stores

seeing shelves packed with:

  • giant tubs
  • flashy labels
  • crazy claims
  • and products promising to:
    👉 build muscle fast
    👉 burn fat instantly
    👉 boost testosterone
👉 or completely transform your physique.

And as a beginner?

👉 you honestly have no idea what you actually need and what you don’t.

That’s exactly how the supplement industry traps people.

Most beginners think supplements are the missing piece

You start working out for a few weeks…

and naturally you want results faster.

So you walk into a supplement store thinking:

👉 “What product will finally give me the body I want?”

And trust me…

👉 I was that guy too.

No disrespect to the people who work in those stores, but looking back now…

👉 most of that stuff was completely unnecessary for me at the time.

Because the truth was:

I was still:

  • new to training
  • inconsistent with my diet
  • recovering poorly
  • and still learning basic fitness habits.

What I REALLY needed was:
👉 better training
👉 better nutrition
👉 better sleep
👉 and consistency

NOT some magic powder with a shredded guy on the cover promising “EXTREME MUSCLE GAINS.”

The supplement industry makes money by making you feel incomplete

This is something more people need to realize.

A lot of supplement marketing is designed to make you feel like:
👉 you’re missing something
👉 your progress isn’t fast enough
👉 or you NEED another product to finally succeed.

That’s how people end up with:

  • cabinets full of supplements
  • drained bank accounts
  • and frustration when they don’t magically transform overnight.

Meanwhile the basics:
👉 training hard
👉 eating well
👉 sleeping properly
👉 and staying consistent

are still what matter most.

Beginners especially need to hear this

If you’re brand new to fitness…

👉 you probably do NOT need 90% of the supplements being marketed to you.

Honestly, beginners can make incredible progress just by:

  • eating better
  • training consistently
  • drinking more water
  • and getting enough sleep.

Simple stuff.

That’s not exciting.
That’s not flashy.

But it’s the truth.

👉 The takeaway

The supplement industry wants you to believe:
👉 another product will change your life.

But most of the time…

👉 the real transformation comes from fixing your habits first.

Because no supplement can replace:

  • discipline
  • consistency
  • proper nutrition
  • and hard work over time.

⚠️ The Regulation Problem With Supplements

Another big problem I have with the supplement industry is this:

👉 a lot of supplements are not regulated as tightly as people think they are.

And that honestly should concern more people.

Unlike prescription medications, supplements do not go through the same level of FDA approval for effectiveness before hitting store shelves.

That means companies can often sell products with:
👉 flashy claims
👉 aggressive marketing
👉 and fancy labels

without having strong proof that the product actually does what it promises.

And honestly…

👉 that’s a HUGE problem.

A lot of the supplement industry marketing is pure hype

You’ll see products claiming they:
👉 melt fat
👉 build muscle fast
👉 boost testosterone naturally
👉 or completely transform your physique

But where’s the proof?

A lot of times:
👉 there are little to no quality studies
👉 weak evidence
👉 or doses so small they probably won’t even do much anyway.

But beginners don’t know that.

They just see:
👉 a shredded influencer
👉 cool packaging
👉 and promises of fast results.

Even influencer supplements work like this sometimes

And let’s keep it real…

👉 some influencers are doing the exact same thing.

There are factories online where people can literally order generic supplement formulas, slap their own branding on them, and suddenly market them as:
👉 “elite performance formulas”
👉 or “secret muscle stacks.”

Meanwhile, the ingredients are often very similar to dozens of other products already on the market.

Just different labels.
Different hype.
Different marketing.

This is another reason I prefer real food first

Because at least with real food…

👉 you know what you’re getting.

I know fish contains:
👉 omega-3 fatty acids
👉 protein
👉 vitamins
👉 minerals

That’s real.

But some random yellow pill from a factory?

👉 who knows.

Maybe it works.
Maybe it doesn’t.

But what I DO know is:
👉 a lot of people are spending huge amounts of money chasing supplements while ignoring the basics that actually matter.

👉 The takeaway

This doesn’t mean ALL supplements are useless.

But it DOES mean people should stop blindly trusting:
👉 labels
👉 influencers
👉 and marketing claims.

Because at the end of the day…

👉 consistency, nutrition, sleep, and training still matter far more than most supplements ever will.

💪 Supplements That Actually Make Sense

Now after everything I just said, you might be thinking:

👉 “Okay… so are there ANY supplements actually worth taking?”

Honestly?

👉 yes.

There are a few supplements that actually make sense and have real research behind them.

And the biggest one is probably:
👉 creatine monohydrate.

Creatine monohydrate actually works

Unlike a lot of supplements on the market…

👉 creatine is one of the best fitness supplements that has actually been studied extensively and shown to help with:

  • muscle growth
  • strength
  • performance
  • and recovery.

I’ve talked about creatine before on ACG Fitness:
CREATINE 101

And one reason creatine makes sense as a supplement is because while it IS naturally found in meat…

👉 you would need to eat massive amounts of meat every day to get the full performance benefits from food alone.

We’re talking:
👉 pounds of red meat daily.

And in this economy?

👉 absolutely not.

So yes, in this case:
👉 supplementing with creatine actually makes practical sense.

But THIS is where the supplement industry gets ridiculous again

The problem is that once companies realize something works…

👉 they immediately try turning it into a marketing circus.

Now suddenly you see:
👉 “Creatine Turbo”
👉 “Ultra Creatine Matrix”
👉 “Extreme Muscle Creatine Plus”

Guys…

👉 you do NOT need all that nonsense.

Regular creatine monohydrate is:
👉 cheap
👉 effective
👉 well-researched
👉 and gets the job done.

Creatine HCL isn’t necessarily bad either…

👉 but monohydrate is usually much cheaper.

And you guys already know:
👉 I want you saving money whenever possible.

Protein powder is another example

Now let’s talk about protein powder.

Guys…

👉 at the end of the day, protein powder is basically processed dairy protein.

That’s it.

And while there are hundreds of different protein powders on the market…

👉 most of them do the exact same thing.

The REAL differences usually come down to:
👉 taste
👉 price
👉 texture
👉 and digestion.

So if you see a protein powder claiming it:
👉 “builds muscle faster”
👉 or is “anabolic” compared to others

👉 it’s probably marketing nonsense.

Because protein is protein.

👉 My recommendation

If you ARE going to buy supplements, I recommend keeping things:
👉 simple
👉 affordable
👉 and evidence-based.

That’s one reason I like MyProtein products.

Not because they magically work better than every other brand…

👉 but because they’re affordable, taste good, and get the job done without all the gimmicks.

No fake promises.
No “secret formulas.”
No nonsense.

Just effective basics.

💸 How to Save Money on Supplements

Let me make this really simple for you guys.

Before spending money on supplements…

👉 make sure your:

  • training
  • sleep
  • and diet

are actually dialed in first.

Because the truth is:

👉 most people probably never even NEED supplements in the first place.

That’s the part the supplement industry doesn’t want you to hear.

Keep it simple

If you DO decide to take supplements…

👉 keep it basic.

Get your:
👉 creatine monohydrate
👉 protein powder

mix them together, add:
👉 milk if you’re bulking
👉 or water if you’re cutting

and move on with your day.

That’s it.

No:
❌ secret muscle formulas
❌ “anabolic matrix” powders
❌ “extreme growth accelerators”
❌ or magical gain secrets.

There is no secret Krabby Patty formula for building muscle.

The real formula has always been the same

Nothing will EVER beat:
👉 hard training
👉 eating the right foods
👉 recovering properly
👉 and sleeping like a baby.

That’s the real secret.

And honestly?

👉 it’s a lot cheaper than buying a cabinet full of supplements every month.

❓ FAQ: Supplements 101

❓ Do supplements actually work?

Some do.
The problem is that the supplement industry mixes:
👉 legitimate supplements
with
👉 overhyped products and marketing nonsense.
Things like:
creatine monohydrate
protein powder
and certain vitamins
can absolutely help when used correctly.
But most supplements are NOT magic shortcuts.

❓ Are supplements necessary to build muscle?

No.
You can absolutely build muscle without supplements.
Supplements can HELP support your goals…
👉 but hard training, good nutrition, and proper recovery are still what matter most.
A beginner who:
trains consistently
eats enough protein
and sleeps properly
will usually outperform someone relying only on supplements.

❓ What is the best supplement for muscle growth?

If I had to pick ONE supplement that actually has strong research behind it:
👉 creatine monohydrate.
It’s affordable, well-studied, and has been shown to help with:
strength
muscle growth
and workout performance.
And unlike a lot of flashy products…
👉 it’s simple.

❓ Why do you recommend real food over supplements?

Because real food gives your body more overall benefits.
For example:
👉 sardines don’t just provide protein.
They also give you:
omega-3 fatty acids
calcium
B12 vitamins
and other nutrients naturally.
That’s much different than taking one isolated pill.
Real food is usually:
👉 more filling
👉 more nutritious
👉 and more satisfying overall.

❓ Are supplements regulated by the FDA?

Not in the same way prescription medications are.
Supplements do not need FDA approval for effectiveness before being sold.
That’s one reason why supplement quality and ingredient accuracy can vary between products.
It’s also why I think people should be careful about blindly trusting flashy marketing claims.

❓ What’s the simplest supplement stack possible?

Honestly?
For most people:
👉 creatine monohydrate
👉 protein powder
is more than enough.
Simple.
Affordable.
Effective.
No giant supplement cabinet required.

🧾 Final Thoughts: Don’t Get Played by the Supplement Industry

At the end of the day, I’m not here to tell you that every supplement is useless.

Some supplements absolutely can help.

But what I AM trying to tell you is this:

👉 if you aren’t wise to the game, you’re going to get played.

And unfortunately…

👉 a LOT of people in the fitness industry are counting on that.

They know beginners:

  • want faster results
  • feel insecure
  • and are looking for shortcuts

So they sell:
👉 magic powders
👉 fake transformation promises
👉 overpriced supplements
👉 and “secret formulas” that supposedly unlock your gains overnight.

Guys…

👉 it’s mostly nonsense.

The basics still win every single time

I will say this again. Nothing will EVER beat:
👉 hard training
👉 eating quality foods
👉 consistency
👉 recovery
👉 and sleeping like a baby.

That has ALWAYS been the real formula.

Not some neon-colored tub with lightning bolts on the label.

Keep your supplement stack simple

If you want my honest advice?

👉 keep it basic.

Get:
👉 creatine monohydrate
👉 protein powder if needed

and focus the rest of your money and energy on:
👉 real food
👉 recovery
👉 and building better habits.

That’s it.

Simple.
Affordable.
Effective.

Be careful who you listen to online

And one last thing…

👉 be aware of fitness scammers online.

Not everyone promoting supplements actually cares about your health.

Some people just want:
👉 affiliate commissions
👉 sponsorship deals
👉 and repeat customers buying products they probably never needed in the first place.

That’s why I’ll always try to keep things honest with you guys on ACG Fitness.

Because fitness should improve your life…

👉 not drain your wallet.

👉 The real secret

The real secret isn’t hidden in a supplement stack.

It’s:
👉 discipline
👉 consistency
👉 patience
👉 and showing up even when you don’t feel like it.

That’s how real transformation happens.

And as always…

Action Creates Greatness. 🔥
